Saddam’s Lawyers Charge Bush; Blair With War Crimes

By James Donahue

Saddam Hussein seems to have turned the tables on U. S. President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair for attacking his country without provocation, leaving it in ruins and murdering an untold tens of thousands of Iraqi’s.

Defense lawyers for the deposed Iraqi leader Wednesday distributed copies of a lawsuit filed on behalf of Saddam and the Iraqi people against Bush and Blair “for destroying Iraq,” a United Press story said.

The suit accuses the two leaders of committing war crimes by using “weapons of mass destruction,” internationally-banned weapons including enriched uranium and phosphoric and cluster bombs, against unarmed Iraqi civilians.

Bush and Blair also are accused of torturing Iraqi prisoners, destroying Iraq’s cultural heritage with the aim of eliminating an ancient civilization, and inciting internal strife, the UP story said.

The suit also accuses the two leaders of polluting Iraq’s air, water and environment.

The story said the lawsuit demands that both Bush and Blair appear before the International Criminal Court in the Hague to answer the charges filed against them. It requests compensation for all material and moral damage inflicted on the Iraqi people, and asks the court to issue the harshest punishment in line with Dutch legislation and the rules of international and humanitarian law.

Knowing how the power structure of the world works, we doubt if anything will come of this lawsuit, since the United States and Britain appear to have the upper hand in this ugly war. But a lot of people in this world, and especially in the Middle East, might agree wholeheartedly with Saddam Hussein.

And filing litigation like this, on the eve of the re-launching of a kangaroo court designed to take Saddam to either the gallows or before a firing squad, is a brilliant move in what is turning out to be an interesting international game of chess. Surely it will give the appearance that Mr. Hussein is still in the driver’s seat, and that he is still a leader in his now war-ravaged nation. The killing and destruction was committed by outside invaders.

Ironically, it has been Saddam who has been demonized by the American media. He is being tried by a U.S. appointed Iraqi court for war crimes and crimes against his people during his years in office. If found guilty of any one of a variety of charges Saddam will either be hung or face a firing squad.
