Dalai Lama Will Not Reincarnate In Tibet
According to UNI, an Indian
news agency, the Dalai Lama has declared he will not reincarnate in Tibet, or any other territory under Chinese
rule, after his present body dies.
That is a startling statement by one of the world's great religious leaders. It
will mean that for the first time ever, a new Dalai Lama must be sought outside Tibet.
The Tibetian Buddhists believe
that the Dalai Lama is the continued spiritual manifestation of Chenrezig, a Brahmin boy who lived at the time of Buddha Shakyamuni,
and who is spiritually connected to the Buddha.
Tenzin Gyatso was declared the 14th Dalai Lama in 1933, following
the death of his predecessor, Thupten Gyatso. He was a child of three at the time.
Each time a Dalai Lama dies, the
search begins for his reincarnated body. Before a child is selected for the high spiritual position, he must show by signs
and personal knowledge that he is the true manifestation of the true Dalai Lama.
Tenzin Gyatso has probably been the
best world-known and world traveled Dalai Lama in history. His books and sayings have influenced millions throughout the world.
It is ironic that most of his work has been done from his home in Sarnath, northern India, where he fled when Chinese troops
entered Tibet in March 1959.
Tibet has been under Chinese Communist rule ever since.
The 66-year-old Dalai Lama
said that if Tibet is not free when he dies, his reincarnation will be born in a free country elsewhere.
The political
implications of this statement makes it impossible for the Chinese to have a hand in one day deciding who the next Dalai Lama
will be, or for a chosen candidate of theirs to have popular support among Tibetans.
Six years ago the Chinese government
seized Panchen Lama, Tibet's second-ranking religious figure and placed him into detention. China has since proclaimed another
boy to be the real Panchen Lama.
