Cakes Of Light

"For perfume mix meal & honey & thick leavings of red wine: then oil of Abramelin and olive oil, and afterward soften & smooth down with rich fresh blood. The best blood is of the moon, monthly: then the fresh blood of a child, or dropping from the host of heaven: then of enemies; then of the priest or of the worshippers: last of some beast, no matter what.

This burn: of this make cakes & eat unto me. This hath also another use; let it be laid before me, and kept thick with perfumes of your orison: it shall become full of beetles as it were and creeping things sacred unto me. These slay, naming your enemies; & they shall fall before you. Also these shall breed lust & power of lust in you at the eating thereof. Also ye shall be strong in war. Moreover, be they long kept, it is better; for they swell with my force. All before me." Liber al vel Legis 3:23-29

For years the O.T.O. has been following this recipe, making what is called "Cakes of Light." It began with Crowley who suggested using "ordinary wheaten flour," the "beeswing of port," and the Oil of Abramelin made from eight parts of oil of cinnamon, four parts oil of myrrh, two of oil of galangal, and seven parts olive oil.

Since Crowley, a variety of interesting concoctions have emerged, but all of them following the basic rules as set forth in these verses. The flour has been altered to corn and whole wheat. Various wines and oils have been used. The common theme is the ritual of making something sacred and then absorbing it into the body to make that also sacred.

It also invokes the powerful magick of the gods.

The strange part of this recipe is that menstrual blood is the preferred mix for the cake batter. This is to be burned (or baked over fire) and then eaten. The ritualistic eating of the cakes involves prayer before the image of a god figure, then the burning of one of the cakes as an offering to the god while personally ingesting a cake. The ritual is believed to be a magickal way of making things happen.

But there is yet another, more important form of holy ritual known to the occultists that is only partly told in these verses. "This hath also another use; let it be laid before me, and kept thick with perfumes of your orison: it shall become full of beetles as it were and creeping things sacred unto me."

During the Gnostic Mass, the ritual involves the act of sexual intercourse between the high priest and a priestess, who is flowing menstrual blood. The semen (dropping from the host of heaven) mixed with the blood then becomes the prayer, or orison, mixing with the cake mixture.

This is the key part of the ritual calling forth the sex energy known as orgone, otherwise known as the 93rd Current. It is said this is the energy of the Universe. The power of Hadit. Those who have participated in this ritual say the room fills with a strange blue light and all within are charged with an energy that lasts for days.

The mention of the beetles is interesting. When the ritual is correct, it is said the insects that fill the earth react to the power and come out of the ground. It is common for the floor to suddenly be covered with thousands of beetles during the height of the mass.

Sometimes the ritual includes the grinding up of some of the beetles and then eating them to "breed lust & power of lust" within the participants.

Strangely, the longer the mixture ferments and swells, the more potent it gets. "Moreover, be they long kept, it is better; for they swell with my force. All before me."
